头肩顶由三个高峰组成，其中中间的高峰最高为头部，两侧的高峰分别为左肩和右肩，其高度大致相等。

左肩：表示股价持续上涨后开始有一些资金开始获利出局，使股价出现短暂的回调。

头部：表示经过短暂的回落后，一些观望的资金认为只是技术性的调整，所以止跌后又继续买进，推动价格回升，头部的成交量比左肩的成交量少，所以股价到高点后，股价又会回落到左肩的颈线位置。

右肩：恰好行情下跌到接近上次的回落低点又再次获得支持回升，那些后知后觉错过了二次上升机会的投资者就会在这次回升中跟进，但此时投资情绪明显减弱，所以后市将会持续下跌。
